Fueling a Cleaner Future

The OCI HyFuels brand provides customers with renewable and low-carbon fuel alternatives to meet evolving regulatory requirements.

Pioneer and leader in green fuels paving the way for a low carbon future

Established in 2015, OCI HyFuels is a pioneer in and the world’s largest producer of green methanol, including the production of biomethanol and bio-MTBE, and trading and distribution capabilities for renewable natural gas (RNG) and ethanol. OCI HyFuels has led the development of green methanol applications in vehicle fuels, with up to 200,000 tons per annum placed in vehicle fuel markets globally.

Unlocking methanol’s potential to power a cleaner future sooner

Unlocking methanol’s potential to power a cleaner future sooner

As a fuel, methanol has several benefits compared to fossil fuels:

  • It is clean-burning, and has less and non-toxic emissions
  • As a liquid, it is easier, safer, and cheaper to store, transport, and handle as existing infrastructure can be used
  • It is a highly efficient fuel with an energy density of 15.8 MJ/J (three times higher than compressed hydrogen)
  • It is versatile for use in internal combustion engines or fuel cells

Green methanol, which is produced from renewable feedstocks including hydrogen and biomethane,  can help decarbonize several hard-to-abate industries, including the marine and heavy transport, power, and industrial sectors.

Sustainable Methanol Products

Bio-methanol:

Bio-methanol:

Can either be produced by using biomethane instead of natural gas in existing facilities or from biogenic fraction of gasification of municipal solid and biomass waste. We use waste, residues and byproducts as feedstocks. Forestry waste and residues must originate from FSC certified forest or equivalent. Bio-methanol will have at least 60% carbon intensity reduction compared to fossil comparator.

E-methanol / green methanol:

E-methanol / green methanol:

Can be produced by combining hydrogen from electrolysis based on renewable electricity and biogenic or recycled CO2. This definition is in line with the EU’s Renewable Fuels of Non-biological Origin (RFNBO) requirements. E-methanol will have at least 70% carbon intensity reduction compared to fossil comparator.

Recycled carbon fuel (RCF) methanol:

Recycled carbon fuel (RCF) methanol:

Can be produced from recycled fossil fraction of gasification of municipal solid waste. RCF methanol can be used in marine shipping and as an effective chemical recycling route to plastic (e.g., via methanol to olefin). Achieves a carbon intensity reduction of at least 70% compared to the industry average.

Low carbon methanol:

Low carbon methanol:

Can be produced with low carbon hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Vehicle Fuel

When used as a fuel, green methanol provides a 60% greenhouse gas emission versus petrol or diesel, without sacrificing vehicle performance, as proven by our partnership with World Rally Championship (WRC) and P1 Fuels as the exclusive green and synthetic fuels provider.

Heavy Transport

In addition to its lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels, low-carbon methanol has the added environmental benefits of low NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions, low particular matter emissions, and is relatively harmless if spilled, while gasoline is not. All of these benefits are crucial in the transportation industry, particularly when a vehicle is used in or near villages, cities, or in nature.

Ahmed El-Hoshy

Through our partnership with Maersk, we’re powering the first ever green methanol maritime voyage. This marks another significant milestone in our global leadership in supplying and trading renewable and low carbon fuels. I’m proud of the crucial role we’re playing in helping to decarbonize energy intensive industries and I look forward to our continued work with the maritime industry to fuel a cleaner future sooner.
