Working towards Europe’s emissions targets

Working towards Europe’s emissions targets

Our Dutch facilities are a driving force in reducing the Dutch chemical industry’s impact on climate change, in line with Europe’s announced targets to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Fuel from waste, not a rubbish idea

Rather than continuing to rely solely on natural gas, we are using renewable biomethane made from waste sources to produce our products.

BioMCN has become a global leader in the production of bio-methanol made from renewable biomethane which can be used as an advanced biofuel in petrol engines and as a lower carbon feedstock for range of products including silicones, plastics and paints.

When used as a biofuel, bio-methanol has a 60% GHG savings versus petrol, helping to decarbonize the transportation sector.

By using renewable biomethane in our production process, not only are we consuming less fossil based natural gas, we are also helping to reduce harmful methane emissions from waste sources that would otherwise be released into the air.

Nutramon®: the smallest Calcium Ammonium Nitrate CO2 footprint in Europe

As part of our ongoing assessment of the potential impact of our products on the environment, in 2020 we conducted a life cycle analysis (LCA) with external verification of our Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) and Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) in accordance with ISO 14040/14044 Life Cycle Assessment Standards.

Based on these externally verified assessments conducted by SGS, our CAN’s CO2 footprint is amongst the lowest in the world. Compared to European peers as benchmarked by Fertilizers Europe, our CAN CO2 footprint is approximately 33% lower than peers implementing best available emissions technology. Our UAN CO2 footprint is similarly best-in-class as it is produced in the same downstream process of nitric acid as CAN.

Hydrogen Coalition

OCI Nitrogen is one of 23 organizations that joined the Greenpeace Netherlands Hydrogen Coalition, which aims to encourage the Dutch government to stimulate green hydrogen for further sustainability of the energy supply.

Green hydrogen is produced from water using green electricity from renewable energy sources.

ISCC+ certified green ammonia

In May 2019, OCI Nitrogen became the first producer in Europe to use bio-methane to produce and sell green ammonia. The sustainable product and mass balance system is ISCC+ certified, and enables customers to produce more sustainable downstream products.

Power to Ammonia

In 2016, OCI Nitrogen formed a consortium with the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology (ISPT), Nuon, Stedin, CE Delft, Proton Ventures, TU Delft, TU Twente, AkzoNobel, and ECN to investigate converting renewable energy, such as solar or wind energy, into carbon neutral ammonia.

The consortium is investing in R&D aiming to make green hydrogen technology applicable for the large-scale production by 2030.

Waste steam gasification to produce green and circular hydrogen

OCI Nitrogen is developing a waste  gasification concept to make green hydrogen from waste streams that can be converted to ammonia.

This will reduce GHG emissions at a large and replicable scale through the more efficient and circular use of municipal waste. This first-of-its-kind of a kind installation is aimed to be built at the Chemelot site.
