SR. SAFETY SPECIALIST

Responsible for the organization’s safety. Helps develop, implement, monitor, and manage safety programs, policies, and procedures. Ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations. Evaluates the organization’s procedures, facilities, and equipment to identify unsafe conditions that require improvement. Research and recommend safety equipment. Responsible for tracking/inventorying safety-related equipment. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision of the HSEQ Manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

 

Your scope of responsibility

  • Being a Safety culture champion, leading by example
  • Works with site and management in the creation of site safety targets and objectives in support of plant and corporate safety strategic initiatives designed to drive a strong safety culture, compliance, and results.
  • Ensures all monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections are being performed as outlined according to site procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform safety audits for the purposes of identifying unsafe work conditions.
  • Lead and champion 10X10 and Safety Leadership Team Audit Programs.
  • Training employees on safety procedures and leading practices.
  • Support and lead the creation and implementation of workplace health and safety plans and procedures and assessing compliance with safety standards.
  • Lead and assist with the collection and reporting of data as it relates to our Key Safety Performance Indicators as well as general progress and status reports.
  • Leading and/or participating in Investigating incidents, focusing on contributing factors and learning opportunities
  • Monitors and reviews Corporate Safety Manual to verify compliance.
  • Evaluate health and safety practice and procedures for risk assessment and following legal guidelines and OSHA guidelines.
  • Coordinates and maintains compliance with industrial hygiene requirements.
  • Keep management appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Ensures that the Safety Specialist responsibilities outlined in site safety procedures and emergency response procedures are understood and met.
  • Examines plant equipment slated for purchase and proposed facility modifications and additions for safety requirements. Recommends modifications or adjustments to correct any deficiencies prior to purchase or use.
  • Monitors, on a regular basis, the availability and condition of appropriate safety equipment in the plant.
  • Present a professional image at all times to clients and vendors and maintain a positive reputation for the company.
  • Responsible for maintaining and understanding radio communication equipment, support users in functionality, understand functionality of repeaters, programming, and tracking equipment.
  • Keep abreast of FCC/State, federal violations, rules, regulations, and licensing.
  • Maintain safety records in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Chairs regular safety meetings and ensures that coordinated safety training and motivational campaigns are conducted in association with company policies.
  • Provides assistance to supervisors regarding the evaluation of safety problems and of employee safety recommendations and complaints. Determines acceptable corrective measures accordingly.
  • Attend and participate in HSEQ meetings as required.
  • Perform miscellaneous functions and special projects as assigned. 
  • Follow all relevant company policies and procedures.
  • Assists other departments and other administrative personnel as necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining the site’s portable gas testing and monitoring equipment.
  • Collects, maintains completed Safe Work/ Hot Work Permits and Audits all Confined Space Permits for completeness.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and conferences to keep current regarding environmental health and safety issues.

What you bring to OCI

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations

  • Professional certification a plus (Ex. CIH, CSP, SMS or OHST).

 

Education, Experience, and/or Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or related technical discipline is preferred.  Minimum of 7 years work experience required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Candidate must possess in-depth knowledge of industrial safety, and OSHA regulations, and a working understanding of behavioral-based safety, industrial hygiene, incident investigation, fire protection, and emergency response.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to write detailed and accurate reports and procedures and develop and deliver presentations to all levels of the site organization.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively organize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Must be willing to work overtime, flexible hours, and on-call as needed.
  • Completion of the OSHA 10- or 30-hour General Industry course is a plus.
  • CPR, first aid and AED certification is preferred.

 

Software

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook required.

 

Physical

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged amounts of time required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate through various means required.
  • Potentially having to extricate patients down from multi-level platforms or structures manually within the facility as well as having to fight fires using multiple methods.

 

Environmental

  • Work is performed within a chemical plant environment, including climbing stairs, scaffolding, and working platforms, inspecting equipment, wearing required personal protective equipment, and working in the outdoor environment.
  • Noise levels are typically moderate.

 

Work Schedule

  • Regular 40-hour work week
  • May work longer hours to meet deadlines as necessary.

 

Travel

  • Less than 10% of the time.
