AdBlue
AdBlue® is a solution used in diesel engines to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx).
What is AdBlue® by OCI?
It is a mixture of urea and demineralized water that is injected into the exhaust system.
Together with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, AdBlue helps reduce harmful emissions by converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

How does AdBlue® work?
Vehicles with SCR technology have a separate tank filled with AdBlue. AdBlue is then injected into the exhaust pipe where it is heated and decomposes into ammonia and carbon dioxide. Ammonia combines with the NOx emissions from the diesel engine, turning into nitrogen and water, both harmless byproducts which are released as steam.
How do we produce AdBlue® by OCI?
At OCI, AdBlue is produced in its purest form, by mixing high-purity urea (hot liquid urea, straight from production = hot melt) with demineralized water in specific proportions to achieve the desired concentration.
The mixture is then loaded and processed for distribution and used in vehicles equipped with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems. The production process ensures that the AdBlue solution meets the required quality standards for effective emission reduction in diesel engines.

More information
SCR stands for Selective Catalytic Reduction. It is an emission control technology used in diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The SCR system works by injecting a urea-based solution (AdBlue) into the exhaust, where it reacts with NOx over a catalyst to convert it into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. This helps diesel engines comply with strict emissions regulations.
From day one of production in Geleen, we can offer lower carbon versions of AdBlue, based on mass balance approach under ISCC Plus.
AdBlue requires some basic precautions to ensure effectiveness and safety:
- Storage
When stored properly, AdBlue has a minimum shelf life of 1 year, but it must be kept in a sealed container away from contaminants and extreme temperatures. It should be stored away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Refill
When refilling a vehicle’s AdBlue tank, avoid spillage and ensure that the AdBlue is poured into the correct tank. Spilled AdBlue should be wiped up immediately with water.
- Use
Use only AdBlue recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Do not dilute or mix AdBlue with other substances as this can affect its effectiveness and damage the SCR system.
- Avoiding contamination
Avoid contamination of AdBlue with substances such as diesel, oil or water, as this can damage the SCR system and lead to increased emissions.
- Monitoring
Monitor the AdBlue level in the vehicle and replenish AdBlue as necessary to ensure continuous operation of the SCR system.
By following these guidelines, you can use AdBlue effectively and ensure that the system functions properly in reducing diesel engine emissions.
